The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Reflection on Muhammad Ali, The Greatest One. Manners ... remember to always be minding them. Author ... Alexandra Smythe Many, many years ago he was one of my passengers on a flight. I made it a rule to never ask for autographs since I felt it was an intrusion on their privacy and just not respectful. But in this case I decided to throw caution to the wind. A very good friend of mine had been in Nairobi during the Rumble in the Jungle. The next day after the fight, the newspaper in Nairobi published a full page picture of Muhammad Ali with a title above it in two inch letters saying, ALI is KING! My friend purchased five copies of the newspaper. And this was not an easy task since they were flying off of the racks. Why did he purchase that many?

Valentine's Day or Love the Easy Way! It's almost February and there are signs of pink and red hearts everywhere. The PREASURE is on. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here at The School of Flaunt, we subscribe to a gentler, easier, dare we say, CHEAPER, Valentine's Day? Can’t believe we are saying this but then we digress. Here are a few simple suggestions: 1. Do “not” go out to dinner on the 14th. You will pay too much and probably get poor service; plus the restaurants are mobbed. ICK! Go out on the 13th or 15th. There, so much nicer. But what do you do on the 14th? Read on.

Trash the Dress, NOT! From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Trash the dress, also known as fearless bridal or rock the frock, is a style of wedding photography that contrasts elegant clothing with an environment in which it is out of place. It is generally shot in the style of fashion or glamour photography. Such photography often takes place on a beach, but other locations include city streets, rooftops, garbage dumps, fields, and abandoned buildings. The woman often wears a ball gown, prom dress or wedding dress, and may effectively ruin the dress in the process by getting it wet, dirty, or, in extreme circumstances, tearing or destroying the garment.

It just needs to be placed back in the refrigerator to set.. “Just before service one can simply decorate the pie top with some fresh whipped cream…no need for anything more. The pie and it’s crust pack a one two punch of “Autumn flavors” and are the focus of this recipe…not a fancy topping!”

More on my BFF! BUT What did the Doctor say to me? Part IV The beginning of week number two has arrived and I was going to take my BFF over to the Doctor’s office for her second check up after surgery. I also had called ahead and asked if I could speak with the Doctor for a few minutes about my face after he saw my BFF. The receptionist said, “Oh, yes I’ll set it up for you.” Isn’t it nice when your BFF is personal friends with the Doctor! No waiting! And I might add that he had called us every day in the evening to see how she was doing that first week. Anyway, we arrive and one of things they do for their patients who have had surgery is let them in through the back door. None of this sitting out in the waiting room with your head covered in bandages while everyone is staring at you!! You then go through a back hallway and are escorted into a private room. I was most impressed!!

Beautiful dark wood flooring throughout, Viking kitchen, and the home was decorated with all of their beautiful things collected from their travels around the world. But this wasn’t like a museum. Some people have the knack to make their homes very sophisticated without being stuffy. And of course they have their copy of The School of Flaunt Handbook sitting on top of three other books on an end table. I giggled when I saw that.

Love it for the color, love it for the taste, the texture -hot or cold; you’ll love this soup anyway! And the best part if serving this soup warm is topping it off with crème fraiche and sautéed scallions. Even a tiny bit of the cold crème fraiche is so unexpectedly refreshing in every spoonful of the soup. That and serving it in white bone china! One of the few times I follow a book recipe (almost) exactly. Melt 3 tablespoons butter over low heat. Add 2 red onions and 2 garlic cloves (peeled and chopped) and sauté until soft and tender. Then add 1 1/2 pounds beets and a couple of gala apples (skinned and cut) for at least another five minutes. Add 1 cup apple cider and reduce the flame until the beets’ and apples’ juices start to thicken the liquids (about 10 minutes). Then add 5 cups chicken stock (I used vegetable stock) and season with sea salt and freshly ground pepper, return to high heat. Once it starts to boil, bring it down to simmer for about 30 minutes. Puree the mix in batches in a blender for a smooth texture. Serves 6 – 8.

There is a strange trend happening in the design world. A scary trend actually. It appears that everyone thinks he/she is an interior designer. People with marginal training and suspect talent, who have no ‘eye’, (we call these people Decorettes™ are showcasing their Design Disaster™ shenanigans in magazines (Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, Veranda, etc.), and worse, hosting television shows (ABC, CBS, NBC, HGTV, Bravo, etc.) under the guise of being ‘experts’! If these people were really ‘experts’ they would be telling you the truth.

We recently became Facebook Friends with Christopher Radko otherwise known as the “Czar of Christmas” by the NY Times. For over a quarter of a century people with discerning taste have been collecting his ornaments. Christopher brought back the art of fine European glass ornaments and the tradition of collecting them. Private collections have been started by celebrities from Elton John, Barbra Steisand, Whoopi Goldberg, Ben Affleck, Heidi Klum, Rosie O’Donnell to Giselle Bundchen. These beautiful ornaments have also graced the Xmas trees of the White House, the Governor’s mansion in Connecticut to Gracie Mansion in NYC. We might add here that your “divas” of good taste, Alexandra and Cate also have their Xmas trees covered in Radko ornaments. With all of these recommendations why would you not start collecting them?

Trite as it may be I wish you where here! I arrived last week having counted the minutes til London was just a memory in our little jet’s the rear-view mirror. I wonder if they have rear-view mirrors? Regardless, Kip and Samantha Ebersol we’re such dears to let me ride in their snappy little GV. From the way she’s tart’d up the interior you’d think she was out to impress someone.

James Swan: 101 Things I Hate About Your House

Dearest Smythe and Cadbury-Clarke, London is lovely as always. A wee bit of rain broken up by the most pleasant human beings on the planet; one can’t complain without feeling that you’ve insulted a nation! I’ve just finished luncheon with Charles and Bunny Broughton. They send their very best and insist you call when you’re next in town. Their new townhouse is a charmer; I’m sure you’ve had the “tour” so I’ll save my “Oh’s” and “Ah’s” till we’re face to face, cocktails in hand. But maybe just a snippet of a comment on Bunnies insistence on populating those glorious rooms with her sad collection of world weary potted plants. Honestly, you’d think the woman actually had a green thumb from the number of these sad specimens!

The Real Collectors by Elizabeth Anne Bonanno

Making Peace With Celebrities I had every intention of posting a blog about why celebrities don’t buy their own jewelry - with only a few exceptions, and then I found myself listening to a panel of women discuss just that. You see, by the end of my blog I had answered my own, very obvious question. Celebrities don’t buy their own jewelry because for the most part, they’re simply billboards that we brand our things on. It seems that gone are the days that these women actually cared about collecting something as precious as jewelry, because people pay them to advertise everything.
