The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Nail Polish

What color today?

As many of you know one of my best friends is LB. She is one of these women who like to dress up. And yes I mean dress up even it is only a pair of jeans she will find a way to make them look great. High heels, jewelry, a cute hat, something to set her apart. In other words she works at being flaunt fabulous! Small aside: After you read The School of Flaunt Handbook and start putting together that flaunt fabulous closet this will all be second nature to you. But I digress.

Recently LB saw a picture of some nail art and I'm using her own words here she thought, "Ick, who would wear that color?" Then she showed the picture to her husband and said, "Isn't this awful?" To her surprise he said, "No, I kind of like it."

The next day, The Donald, as I prefer to call him, was going to do some errands and asked her if she needed anything. Being the little smarty pants that she is, she said, "Yes, pick up some of that nail polish that you like for me." Never in her wildest imagination did she think he would go get her nail polish. You guessed it! The Donald came home with a bottle of blue and a bottle of green. So to humor him she puts on the green! What does he say, "I love it!"

Now where do I come into the story? She calls me up and says I'm wearing green nail polish and The Donald likes it! I'm laughing at this point but thinking to myself, "Green nail polish! Realllllllly! LB you've gone too far!"

So a few days later LB and I meet and she has green polish on. Well, I rather liked it but wasn't ready to take the plunge yet. Lots of hemming and hawing on my part about I'm not so sure if I would like that on me. But she was bound and determined that I was going to stick my toe into the water of new nail polish colors so to speak and branch out. I hear her favorite words, "Let's go shopping." So off we go.

Naturally where do we end up? The cosmetic department! No more nude, blush, or red for you young lady was what I'm sure she wanted to say but she eased me into the new colors with GOLD! This would look fabulous on you, was what she kept saying. Just like a siren's song calling to the sailors, how could one resist!

So I go home with my bottle of gold polish. As usual one layer was not enough. The second one made the nails. I sat there and thought, "I think I like this and it is December, holiday parties and whatever." I'm going to leave it on.

The test came when the Flaunt Forty had their Christmas luncheon. What would they say? Would any one notice?

Well, notice they did! I even had someone say to me, "Are your nails real? I love them!' Puhleese, are my nails real. The last thing I'm going to do is wear fake nails!

But now going back to The Donald. We are all together for cocktails a few days later, before going out for dinner, and I flashed him my gold nails. What does he say, "Nice but when are you going to go for some color? Chicken?"

Chicken!! Whaaat!! Is my first thought. Then I have to admit my second thought was, "I'll never do green. It is just too much for me." But I hear coming out of my mouth like a spoiled teenager. "Who are you calling chicken?" He laughs at me and says, "You are chicken."

Well, I let that "chicken" comment gnaw at me for a few days. Then LB and I are out again and she says she going to buy some nail polish. She now has many shades of blue, plum, green, yellow etc. and I have gold. Boring!

So I purchase one bottle of green. Yes one little bottle of green. I had it for weeks just sitting in a drawer and finally one day I decide to put it on.

OMG! I sat there and kept staring at my nails! I'm not sure about this?? Of course I call LB and tell her that I have green nails now and I'm not sure if I'm going to leave the polish on. What do I hear, "You're just not use to it. Trust me in a few days you will love it." Sure I will, in a few days? Right!

The next day I have my hand in a jar of nuts to have a snack. I looked down and thought, "Since when did they start putting pistachio nuts in this mixture?" And then I realized it's my nails! But I have to admit I'm starting to get used to them now. In fact, I'm actually starting to like them. Are blue, lavender or plum in my future? I think they might be? No stripes, flowers, flags though. I do have my limits!

Ah, all of this coordination of nail colors to bring out accessories and certain colors in your outfit, or just to take a simple black outfit and give it some pizzazz. It's worth it!

If someone had every told me that I would wear green nail polish I would have told them they were crazy! CALL ME CRAZY!! But I bet you Iris Apfel is wearing something other than blush. So try a new color, you just might like it. And the wonderful thing about these colors is they aren't like a tattoo. You don't like it, just get out the nail polish remover. Easy, breezy!

Come on now, experimenting is fun. Don't be such a bore! You aren't in the boardroom now! First one to send us a picture of your nails in a color other than red, pink, coral, blush or clear, we'll send a School of Flaunt diploma to. Now go shop and start polishing!! Send those flaunt fabulous painted digits to cate@schoolofflaunt.com or post your picture under this article. Hurry!!

I love this! I have all the safe colors...but I have a couple of "experimentals" I've yet to try...so today, I'm trying one! (I tried OPI's Russian Navy a few years ago and loved it...then got away from it.)
