The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Mimsy Loves Lucy, Well Not So Much!

Flying back in the day, one of the perks was the constant stream of Celebrities on our flights to and from Los Angeles or New York. One of the most surprising was about the late Lucille Ball.

Mimsy is the sweetest girl around. Cute, smart and soooo nice. No one could ever be rude to Mimsy, right? Wrong. Here is the tale:

The head of the LAX airport approached the gate with an entourage surrounding a brassy red head, yes none other than Lucille Ball, herself. She was whisked through the jet way and settled in First Class with her assistant on the aisle.

Mimsy was so excited!! Lucy herself!! What fun this will be!! Mimsy straightened her jacket and approached the duo.

Mimsy: Welcome! We are honored to have you with us!

Lucy: Looking out the window, says nothing.

Assistant: Miss Ball does not speak to the "Help". All conversation will be through me.

Mimsy: Totally crestfallen, "Oh, I am so sorry". Thinking: What am I apologizing for?

Assistant: Bring our drinks immediately and keep them coming. Miss Ball will not be kept waiting.

Mimsy darts back to the galley to give the others this surprising report! The Captain, hearing all this is incensed!

Captain: That is no way to treat my Crew. (And he immediately goes out into the cabin to have a word with the pair.)

Captain: How do you do, Miss Ball? Welcome and I hope you will enjoy your flight to New York.

Assistant: What is with you people? I explicitly told "that" Stewardess that Miss Ball will not be speaking to the "Help!"

Captain: Well you can tell Miss Ball, I will give her five minutes to begin speaking to all My Crew, or she can take another flight on another airline!

Aside: Apparently this was the norm for Miss Ball. She would not look or speak to a Crew Member; rumor had it that Desi had a few flings with some Stewardesses in the past. Ms. Ball's attitude was famous throughout the airline industry and Mimsy's Captain was having none of this nonsense.

Still no word from Lucy, so the Captain tells the duo to vacate the aircraft. Of course we are all silently yelling, YES!! They will not be flying with us today. OMG I cannot tell you the language that came out of the Assistant's mouth or Lucy's. Seems she could speak after all.

To this day, Mimsy still tells this story outraged! Imagine, who did she think she was? I told her don't feel too bad, she was even horrible in an interview with Jane Pauley too.

Oh well, we will still enjoy those old TV shows, but isn't it a shame she wasn't more like the "I Love Lucy" we thought we knew. Wonder how she treated Ethel?

We did hear about this from Management. Ironically, they had been through such turmoil with Ms. Ball before and she was now "Banned" from flying with us in the future.

Better watch your manners students.

P.S. Note from Alexandra: Someone who has been on Dancing with the Stars did the same thing to me. Only their manager would speak to the crew. Strange how we all lost our tongues. Seems that they became invisible on the flight. Had to stop us and ask for everything. And trust me there were no communications!! Really why would people act like that when they know "The Help" has access to their food! And one last thought - who is going to help you evacuate that plane? DUH!! Just saying  "The Help" will always get the last laugh. Chocolate Pie, anyone?
