The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

OSCARS BORING!

LET'S TALK JEWELRY

I was going to write a long blog about the Oscars but frankly I felt they were rather boring. So here is a quick summary and then we'll get down to talking accessories!

Blah, blah, blah, yes the dresses were not that spectacular. I can hear the majority of you now saying, "Yes!" Really Meryl Streep looked like she was wearing a gold sack that at any minute was going to fall off her shoulders, think of a woman who is always tugging at her bra straps; I bet that was what she was constantly doing at the after parties. And then there was Glenn Close, puhleese Glenn ask someone to be really honest with you next time. You looked stocky and like you were trying to cover up something in that dull colored green outfit. Just saying. And J Lo, if you want to always be wearing the same look at the Oscars, meaning a dress that is cut down to your navel, make sure you get taped into it! Rather embarrassing!!

Now hope you are all seated if you love Angelina and Brad because here I go; Angelina looked like she had twigs for arms. She has to be one step from being diagnosed as anorexic; if you want to look sexy, have a slit on a dress that doesn't have a full skirt which hides it and then you won't have to posture like a Pink Flamingo. Talk about looking ridiculous and stilted. Stop gasping you know you thought the same thing! And as for Brad, darling you reach an age where long, greasy hair that isn't even thick anymore is not appealing or even slightly sexy. You can get away with that if you are rehabbing homes but not at the Oscars. Cut the hair and wash it next time! Thanks!

O.K. so enough talk about the boring celebs. Let's talk jewelry now. Yes there was spectacular jewelry being worn that cost millions but that was even kind of boring. Nothing jumped out at me. Anything that you can remember now? I didn't think so.

So what are we the common people who are not walking the Red carpet suppose to do for jewelry ideas that don't cost millions? Oh Students of Flaunt there are so many new things being designed that will give that special SOF look and not cost you an arm and a leg. And trust me we aren't talking plastic here. If you have read the School of Flaunt Handbook we do discuss plastic in detail for it can rear its ugly little head in so many places when least expected. But I digress.

There are many, many "flaunt fabulous Fashion jewelry" statements to be made. Remember it use to be called costume jewelry, please refer to it as Fashion jewelry from now on! But continuing, you can find anything from cracked crystal to feathers. Yes you read right, we are talking cracked crystals. Go to Henri Bendel in NYC and check out Auden. This line was named after the designer's 4 year old niece; remember that for cocktail chatter. Auden is taking Hollywood's fancy with the likes of Rihanna, Kim Cattrall, Blake Lively and Paula Abdul wearing it. Seems to be for all generations.

But this is really interesting! What? BRASS, no I'm not kidding. Prices on brass jewelry are all over the ball park. Think of statement pieces that can be elaborate or simple. You can have a beautiful yellow color that is highly polished or go the antique brown way with brass that is oxidized. Think cuffs, earrings, necklaces and even brass on shoes! You can wear this jewelry with your jeans or a dress and heals. Now we are talking really versatile. Can't see you in that million dollar diamond necklace with your jeans from our fav Harry Winston but can we see you now with some great statement brass on!

And last but not least by far is the new Tony Duquette line at Coach. Oh my, now we are talking glam that will not break the piggy bank! For those of you who don't know who Tony Duquette is he was a Hollywood icon! He created such amazing costumes for Broadway and Hollywood movies. Unfortunately he passed in 1999 but he left behind a collection of fine jewelry and when we are saying fine, we mean to die for! And who do we have to thank for this new Coach line? Hutton Wilkinson!

Hutton and Reed Krakoff have collaborated and designed a collection of jewelry for Coach. It all has the Tony Duquette feel for glam, color and statement! With combinations of cut glass, enamel, genuine Lapis and Malachite. Hours and hours were spent reviewing Mr. Duquette's books, photographs and items in his personal archives to design this collection.

Splashy, fun, sophisticated and mostly affordable this Tony Duquette "limited" edition collection is perfect for our School of Flaunt students. We suggest that you run now and at least look. When they are sold out you will be sorry!!

Oh Students, so many pieces of jewelry to wear and so little time. But do enjoy the hunt. And let us know what you have discovered too. Remember we are all always learning. Why be ordinary when you can extraordinary! Words to live by!!

Air Kisses - I'm in a Hollywood mood ;-)

I thought Michelle Williams looked great!

I love Hutton new pieces for Coach they are defiantly needed. As he says More is More. It's selling out so fast ! Good sign. The reason that we don't see tons of Jewelry on the stars today is that they want to be paid to wear the jewels from the big Jewelry houses! How sad for us. In the old days they the stars stylist borrowed the jewels !

Cate, you crack me up with your cracking wit and words of cracked crystal... Love it when other people agree that Oscars are a yawn. I do adore brass in all shades and I am bedazzled by Tony Duquette, who had a serious case of Glam Stance. We need to meet for cocktails and have a luscious coze.....flaunt fabulous you are. Jen

My birthday happened to fall on the Oscars, so while I kept it in on in the background, I must admit that I was on the phone for most of it. I have missed the Oscars about five times since I was eight years old. But these days I have to confess that I only really watch it to see any Elie Saabs that the stars might be wearing. I love Elie Saab. After this post I think I will also be on the lookout for Hutton Wilkinson.
