The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

“Shoes” or What are you thinking?

What are you thinking?

Cate and I were having a discussion recently about style and the topic of shoes came up. Ten years from now we are all going to look back on this era of over the top shoes and laugh ourselves silly. Your children are going to be looking at pictures of you, Lady Gaga and other celebs that are wearing these, and let's admit it here, some of them are really ugly monstrosities, and then you will hear, "Mom you really didn't wear these, did you?" It will be like Beehive hair dos, black finger nail polish, wigs and all those past nightmares called fashion!

Note: We will make an exception about wigs for Tina Turner. And the woman is 72 years old (11/26/39) and still wears a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes like we all wish we could! "Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river" - Sorry we were having a moment!

But getting back to the children, now you with the sheepish look on your face that is also blushing are going to say, "Yes Honey I did." Lady Gaga flashes in front of your eyes with her over the top eye makeup and you thank God that you didn't do that! The shoes were bad enough. Meanwhile your children are laughing hysterically at you and running around the house threatening to show these pictures to their friends. Isn't that a pleasant thought?

Unfortunately, we probably have another three years, horrors maybe five, of putting up with what designers are doing to ruin our feet, (corns, calluses and falling arches!), but also to even ruin our outfits.

Yes we said, "Ruin your outfit!" Do you want people to only be looking at your feet after you just spent all of that time putting together the right look? Are hooker heels what you are striving for? Well honey you got it going on if you are wearing some of these shoes. And the other good news is that you can pay anywhere from $900 to over $1200 easily to look like a hooker. Puhleese!!

So when you are walking through the lobby of that grand hotel (think Four Seasons or the Peninsula) to have lunch or dinner with friends and are approached by someone flashing you a toothy grin and asking how much, they aren't asking how much you spent on those shoes!

A small aside: Now we hope that you have been given those wonderful tall genes at birth but if you haven't please feel free to go with the stilettos. Just use some good judgment ladies.

One last thought. We were recently out for dinner and a group of young girls passed our table. They all had on wedges that were at least four to five inches. Trust us there was not one of them that could walk in them. Swaying, ankles buckling, and walking on tip toes are not the way you want to enter the room. So before you venture out in those stilettos please practice walking in the privacy of your own home. And not in front of the children!

Your Shoe Queens of Good Taste,

Alexandra and Cate
