The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Winning! Yes, with Tiger blood coursing through my veins I decided that "retail therapy" was needed. Ummm, do you think that might help Charlie Sheen? Probably not! But I digress.

I had those lovely little plastic gift cards for Neiman's that had been sitting on my desk since Xmas. Some say great self control but I say, "No, just wasn't in the mood to shop. You know it does take time and energy." But now those little cards were calling to me. With spring being right around the corner my wardrobe needed to be refreshed. But to be honest it was the idiot factor that really got me to go!

Yes, I had been dealing with it seemed like every idiot in the world recently, and I'm being kind here, so therapy was in order! I picked the day and time. One must have a good night's sleep and figure in traffic. I would leave late in the morning and stay for an early dinner to miss rush hour in both directions.

Well, the morning of my "therapy session" arrived and I now had to decide what I was going to wear. Something comfortable! Easy to take off and put back on. Ladies know what I mean. Nothing worse than pulling off a sweater over your head 50 times! Really does take the "sport" out of the shopping.

What to wear, what to wear? Well, I was going to spend a lot of time in Neiman's so I decided on a silk blouse, black slacks and a pair of low heeled Ferragamo's for easy walking. Remember, you don't like the staff to sneer as you are perusing the racks of "I need, I want!"

Ah, a perfect outfit selection. I knew this as soon as I arrived. I was barely inside the store and one of their sales staff immediately approaches me and says, "I love your blouse. It must be a Chanel?" Even if it hadn't been I would have replied yes! Why do they need to know any better? Remember that students, when you get a compliment, just smile and say, Thank you!" Everyone does not need to know what you are thinking and doing. Words my Mother taught me at her knee. Details on that conversation in a later post.

My mind was slightly whirling now as I decided where to begin. SHOES! I proceed to the shoe department and slowly circle it. Then I go around for a second look. Of course the sales clerk had already complimented me on my blouse and asked if I needed any help. "No just looking for now."

On the third time through the department I started picking out the shoes. Prada and Valentino seemed to be whispering, take me home. It was like Lorelei calling me into the water. I couldn't resist them any longer! Don't you love it when they fit! Heaven I was in heaven. But I controlled myself with two pairs for I had also decided to seek out some other little gems, as in jewelry.

One pair of Prada red patent leather wedges with a cute little bow on them and a Valentino patent leather heel in nude with the biggest bow you have seen on the toe were now in my Neiman's silver bag. I was walking on cloud nine. Bad pun! But I just scored. Two points for my team!

Now I must tell you that I recently lost one of my gold loop earrings. Ruins the set! I was really upset with myself about this. They were what you call, your go to earrings. Always there for you. Looked good with jeans or frankly most everything. But this time I'm thinking costume. Gasp! I heard you. No we at the School of Flaunt have nothing against costume or as they prefer to call it now Fashion jewelry. Remember this little adage, "If you wear enough of the good stuff they will think it is all real."

Again I start to scout all of the counters. A young vivacious clerk asks if she can help me. I said I was looking for a pair of gold loop earrings. Not to small and not to big. Her face lights up and she says, "I have the perfect pair for you David Yurman."

"No, no," I reply. "I love David Yurman but I want to wear these for every day and his earrings are heavy. By the end of the day my earlobes hurt. These are for shopping and running around in. Plus if I lose one of them or the set I won't be so upset with myself. I really would like to look at costume."

She guides me over to a counter where she has a brand called Alexis Bittar. Frankly I had never heard of them before but they were great! Two different pairs of my new find were rung up. Now I have to admit that it took as much time to purchase these, as it would have to have gone for the high end designer, but I made a new best friend at the jewelry counter. It was probably because I went into my past persona of Flight Attendant. Always making new friends. We hugged before I left and she told me that she hoped to see me again soon! Note: Alexis Bittar is really a man. Keep up students!

Where to now? I really wanted a new blouse. As I meandered through the plush world of designers and then went to the Lafayette area (lower prices) I again was approached by a clerk. "I love your blouse, it must be Chanel." This just goes to make our point in our handbook, "people do know quality." So please buy wisely. Everything that sparkles does not have to be gold or Chanel but it should look like quality! Cate suggests that you memorize that point.

But I digress; fatigue was really starting to set in now. The thought of trying on blouses had absolutely no appeal. Dinner was what I needed! I found a little spot and had some Portobello stuffed raviolis and ice tea. Frankly, at this point I had decided that the rest of my gift cards would have to wait for another time. Of course as I was making my way to the parking garage, you guessed it. I just had to take a stroll into Nordstrom's. I did make another new best friend in their jewelry department but didn't purchase anything.

I left tired but happy with my shoes and earrings plus new friends! Winning!! The Tiger blood had left my veins now and all I wanted to do was get home, have a glass of wine, and admire my new purchases. Isn't that half the fun of shopping?

P.S. When I arrived home my husband asked me what I had gotten. I said, "Oh a pair of Prada shoes and some other things." He smiled, chuckled and said, "The Devil does wear Prada." I threw him a kiss and told him "thank you" for the gift certificates. Pul leese everyone knows Anna Wintour is really lovely! As I will be too in my new Prada shoes. Winning!
