The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

The Art of Fine Dining!

Wonderful old school restaurants that ex pats, tourists and locals frequent abound in Hong Kong but there are a few that Mummy loved from her past visits. Seeing that I was the Guest it was imperative that I do something for my hostess! Needless to say I couldn't begin to repay her generosity but at the very least I wanted to indulge her culinary desires. American Express card get ready! Maybe all of these charges will bounce me up to Black, otherwise known as Black Stealth buying at its best. You'll have to read our book to understand but then I digress.

Mummy had stayed at the Peninsula many times over the years and found that morning breakfast in her suite was the only way to start the day. Obviously she asked Cate and me to join her. That made paying for our breakfast by Moi impossible or so she thought.

I had already spoken to the manager and asked that any room service charges be transferred over to my American Express card. I thought it would be a nice little surprise for her upon check out. Cate had told me that she does study the bill before signing, even though we might call her Mrs. Daddy Warbucks, the woman doesn't like to get ripped off! One doesn't acquire or keep their money by being careless! Remember that students.

But back to fine dining. Gaddi's which some consider the Quintessential Gourmet French restaurant in Hong Kong is in the Peninsula. Opened in 1953 its first head chef was Philip Sedwick a Brit. So of course all of the distinguished English patrons of the hotel and city made sure they went to Gaddi's.

Oh Students of Flaunt, Gaddi's exudes old Hong Kong! It is gorgeous with beautiful chandeliers and gold and blue throughout the room. The waiters seem to glide throughout removing your utensils and filling your water glasses without you even knowing. It is Michelin quality at the very best!

But continuing on, to surprise Mummy I had already ordered her favorite champagne, Dom Perignon, which I have to say is mine too, and Beluga Caviar with blinis. Barely had we been asked what bottled water we preferred when the champagne glasses appeared and the Dom was being presented to me. It was just too perfect. The timing was impeccable, and then I suggested that we not order dinner right away and enjoy our champagne when Walla the Beluga appeared! Mummy eyes lit up and she smiled her ever coy smile. Then she raised her glass and said, "Oh my darling girls we will have such a good time this week. Thank you Alexandra."

So we wined and dined that evening on wonderful entrees and more. I must add here that I loved the soup bowls with the handles. So European and you just don't see them in the states. But one of the best parts of the evening was when we were waiting for our chocolate soufflé; our waiter came over and presented Mummy with a mascarpone mousse with butter caramel ice cream. As he placed it in front of Mummy he said, "To Madam from me." Mummy was all smiles. Of course the second bottle of Dom didn't hurt any of us either. But then who cares, we only had to walk to the elevator!

Remember this students: I knew that Mummy had made reservations for us at Gaddi's so before we arrived I had called the restaurant and informed them I would be paying for the dinner and gave them my American Express card number. Toward the end of the meal I excused myself as if I was going to the Powder Room and signed the bill. So lovely at the end of a meal, no arguing over who is paying! We simply got up and left when we wanted. Such a perfect way to start our trip in Hong Kong!

We will let you know about our other culinary feasts in our next blogs. Ah sweet dreams, I know we will sleep well tonight!

Alexandra
