The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Where to begin? Last week I had 40 women descend upon my home. Why? We decided amongst ourselves to do a little fund raising for a very special school. This school is for children that come from homes where they unfortunately have had physical or emotional abuse. They either reside on campus or come by bus from foster homes.

With the holidays quickly descending upon us we knew that some of these children had absolutely no family to go home to. Very sad but true. But the school always tries to make the holiday a little special for these children by taking them to Disneyland or another amusement park for the day. Of course this all takes money!

Now we all could have just written a check, but how much fun would that have been? Very little. What to do? A live auction! Oh were we in our element with this one. Cost of admission was only $20 per woman. This was to cover my expenses for wine, Bloody Marys, Mimosa's, bartender, valet and someone to take care of the dishes.

Well, the fleet of BMW's, Mercedes and eco friendly vehicles started to arrive at 11 AM. Food, pot luck! Yes bring a dish and you should have seen what they brought! Everyone really put themselves out and most was home baked, well, most LOL! As you know we think caterers, high end bakeries etc. are not a bad thing, but we were not there to just eat and drink. You also needed to bring something that we could auction off. Presto, you ask they will provide.

One of the women and her husband own a winery; simple a case of wine was there. Another was giving a gift certificate to one of her favorite restaurants. There were name bags as in Louis Vuitton etc. that had never been used. Lots of high end costume jewelry, a catered dinner at your home for 8, an oriental rug (which I might add there was a real cat fight over) and a mountain bike, etc. I can hear you all laughing now. Mountain bikes yes a high end mountain bike and believe it or not they went crazy for that one and really bid it up! Who knew?

I'm sure most of you remember LB, my friend who is 5'9" in her stocking feet. LB was our auctioneer with back up from moi. We strutted out stuff, badgered playfully with the audience and pried lots of money out of their pocket books. It wasn't really that hard and a few Bloodies before the auction didn't hurt either!

The great thing about an auction like this you don't have to sell any tickets! You select a guest list that is by invitation only and they know they have to bring their check books. Cate and I give our SOF recommendation to having fund raisers like this. Practically no fuss no muss! And lots of fun too. Remember giving back is the SOF way. It is never to late to think about charity!

More details later on some of the personalities involved. The Queen of Grande Dames from the neighborhood was there! Think polo, as in horses not shirts.

P.S. If you want to do this with your friends remember this: if you can get a deal we want you to take it! Alexandra went to the Farmer's market and got all of her flowers for $20. She was asked if her arrangements came from her garden and there were many oohs and ahhs. (White carnations, sun flowers, orange and yellow mums, zinnias). I have to admit they did look wonderful! The Ladies thought she had outdone herself, linens on all of the tables, flowers, no plastic plates or glasses. Think of large box stores when they are having sales! There is no reason to serve your guests on a paper plate or out of a plastic cup! Terribly non SOF students. As we said, when you can get a deal go for it. Everything need not be Wedgewood to end up looking rich! Remember presentation is everything!
