The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

RL in Chicago, Land of the See and Be Seen!

Oh what fun! I entered the beautiful RL restaurant adjacent to the Chicago Ralph Lauren store which brought back such warm memories of English Clubs in London. The maitre d' immediately seated me at what I was told was a key table. "Who would know me?" I asked. "It doesn't matter," replied this most charming man casually. "Everyone is someone in this room." "Really," I said as I quickly perused the room with a cool SOF glance. (Taking in the picture quickly is an SOF attribute that you must learn early on. Staring is so totally non School of Flaunt.)

In a matter of seconds I quickly saw how nicely everyone was dressed and it certainly seemed that they had lovely manners too. Then I saw her! Oprah! There she was with her BFF, Gayle. I have to admit that I had stars in my eyes as I watched them from the corner of my eye sipping their tea. Oh weren't they ever so SOF. I was thinking that Chicago is getting better and better to me every minute when Mummy and her realtor appeared.

"I've done it!" she exclaimed. "I have selected a large apartment on East Lake Shore Drive with a sweeping view of the Lake and the North Shore. I'm sure your father will approve." She oozed satisfaction with her latest acquisition! I could see Katherine, Mummy's realtor was absolutely giddy with the commission dollar signs in both eyes! As the congratulatory champagne was flowing she proceeded to tell me about every room and how it was decorated. I might add that she was not even stopping to recognize Oprah and her BFF!

So it is done. If Mummy passes the condo board, and who wouldn't love her, she will have another home in the United States. I just hope that she doesn't refer to everyone as Yanks and tell them how she loves the colonies. We'll keep her away from her Boodles before that interview! This will be lovely though because now she will have homes from coast to coast and in the middle too. Unfortunately we may never see a Five Star Hotel here again, sigh! Really though I am happy for her and she did love her Northwestern Doctor. God help him when he learns she will be a local. He might retire?

So, I ordered the Crab Louis and Mummy devoured the Liver with Coffee Reduction which she said was the best in the world. Then as we were leaving she saw Oprah and Gayle. As only Mummy could do she glided over to them and introduced herself. You must understand Clarissa can be ever so charming and people just gravitate to her. (Another characteristic of a SOF devotee.) The conversation quickly turned to the neighborhood and as only Mummy can do they all became instant friends. Probably her lovely accent had something to do with this?

As I stood there, I must admit slightly dumb struck, I could hear Oprah saying to Mummy, "Have you been to Art Smith's Table 52?" Mummy explained that since she was a going to be a new resident of Chicago that would certainly be put on her to do list. Then as only Clarissa can successfully pull off she told Oprah that they simply must get together and she would ring up Oprah as soon as she was settled. I saw Oprah slip her a business card and then Clarissa gave Oprah an air kiss and we headed for the front door. Clarissa with the movers and shakers in Chi town as the locals call it. Why do I see a local publicist in Mummy's future?

I am speechless, Cate
