The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Alexandra's Modern Family?

Reminisces about Thanksgiving 2010:

Holidays as we all know can be an adventure. Mine started the day before Thanksgiving as mother and father would be arriving then. I had almost begged them to come two days before Thanksgiving because flying commercial is an absolute nightmare now, even if you are going first class. Add that it is the day before Thanksgiving; well no more need be said! But Mother would have none of that since her social schedule couldn't be changed. So be it, they would travel the day before Thanksgiving.

I had given them a heads up on the new regulations that the TSA was enforcing now. I could just see Mother with her arms stretched over her head in one of those x-ray machines and her good jewelry being examined by a screener. I'm praying that Mother will keep her mouth shut! I remember when we were checking in for a flight in Philadelphia and the ticket agent said, "Philly to Los Angeles." My mother replied, "We purrfer to call it Philadelphia."

God forbid that anyone try to give her a pat down. I can see the headlines in the Philadelphia Enquirer now. The Mayor will be called and heads will roll! Lord help them all! After today why do I see Net Jets in their future?

As for their arrival, I had already decided to hire a limo to pick them up if for no other reason than to keep me sane! I couldn't bear the thought of being near an airport during this time of the year and didn't want to subject my husband to that nightmare either. Plus my mother and father really purrferred that too! LOL!

So I spent the last three days with repeated trips to the super markets and gourmet shops in town. The silver was shined, the linens were all fresh, the flower arrangements had been put in place and entertainment for all had been planned. Yes, entertainment! The last thing you don't want is a group of relatives having too much time on their hands! We all know where that can lead too. Too much reminiscing and then there is always someone who has that extra glass of wine and look out!

The subject of who didn't get what in the will, I should have gotten the Ming vase, why did you send John to Exeter Academy instead of Deerfield and then everyone starts to chime in and the madness starts! Dear Lord help me through this! Oh and I almost forgot, my gorgeous hunk of a cousin is coming with his new love. In fact this will be a "coming out" party too! He is bringing his new love and fiancé, Tom. What will mother think of this? And then this too will pass.

But speaking of Tom, he and my cousin do make a gorgeous couple! In fact it is rather aggravating. Why do two such "beautiful" men have to be playing for the other team? I always laugh inside when I'm out with them because I can see all of those women drooling. Win some, lose some Ladies!

Oh, I just had a stroke of genius. Tom is a designer and I might add a very good one too. One of my neighbors was in Architectural Digest recently; you know where I'm going with this one. I'll wet his appetite for doing my home. As Cate likes to say, "He'll want in." OMG, this will be flaunt fabulous!

Getting back to Thanksgiving, I hope everything is in order, but then I always think that everything is in order for one of these family extravaganzas, until I have to make that midnight run to the store because we ran out of something and what will I do for breakfast tomorrow!

Oh now it starts, I can hear the limo driver ringing at the front gate. Valium anyone?

More later,

Alexandra
