The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Alexandra's Thanksgiving Tales

My mother and father arrived safely and without incidents so I was grateful that the Thanksgiving holiday would start out this well. Of course she brought a steamer trunk so that she would have an outfit for any occasion that might arise. My personal opinion was that she wanted a large suitcase to carry home her booty from Black Friday! Why carry it? That is a ridiculous question, because she didn't want to wait for shipping!

But getting back to the big day, the casa was full. Mother was in her glory with so many relatives to chit chat with. My husband planned to take my father out in the morning for a little Sporting Clays and Skeet shooting so he would be happy and the golf cart was charged for anyone who was bored and wanted to drive through the neighborhood. Board games were out for more entertainment, the bar overflowed with beverages and munchies so things were looking up.

Things were looking up, yes until my foot started to act up! LB arrives with her husband and promptly diagnosis the problem. She had the same thing two years ago. Her advice: wear high heels and take lots of Advil, ice it and then elevate your foot. Elevate my foot! You must be kidding I have 18 people here for Thanksgiving dinner!

At this time my gorgeous cousin and his fiancé, Tom, jump into the conversation. Sit down they exclaim in unison! We'll take care of everything. OMG! The three of them were now in Thanksgiving heaven. Martha Stewart would have been proud. The pots and pans are flying, gravy is being made, the turkey is being carved and more canapés are out on the bar! In the back of my mind I could only think, "Thank you God for not letting my husband deep fry a turkey." Pictures of the local fire department arriving to put out the fire with the house burning down were not my idea of how to spend Thanksgiving!

Now I must add that my Mother never likes to co-mingle holidays! No early Poinsettias or Lenox Xmas china will be seen until after December 1st. Knowing her quirks, I had gotten up at the crack of dawn to make sure that the dining room would be appropriately set up!

Success! I got the smile and nod of approval first from her and then the comment, "Oh that is lovely Alexandra you always make everything so festive." Now please do not think my Mother is a bully. She just has her standards and the same thing would hold true in her home! You might say the School of Flaunt really started with her.

But getting back to the relatives, some were spending the night and the locals were going home. Fortunately for me, my cousin and Tom would be here the day after Thanksgiving too! Oh those boy toys, not only are they good looking but they can cook too! So between my husband, father and them breakfast, lunch and dinner the following day were great too! I lounged with my foot up, iced, with lots of Advil racing through my body and I also did a little self medicating, as in a Bloody Mary's!

But the day after wasn't about food anymore. Who are we kidding, I'll take that back since they ate like there was no tomorrow! I'll continue in my next blog with the adventures of my Mother and LB getting in some Black Friday shopping.

Hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Alexandra
