The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Flaunt Fab Forty Becomes Fifty Five!

Category: SOF Divas’ Diaries ®  |  Permalink

I survived Thanksgiving to promptly roll into December with the Flaunt Fab Forty luncheon. Each December we meet for lunch at the beginning of the month before everyone starts to book up for the holidays and scatter all over the world.

Usually we meet at the club because it is easy but this year the group was professing boredom with that idea and wanted to go elsewhere. Who would organize this? Yes you are right, Moi. Do I have "to nice" written across my forehead? Or could it be that all of those Boards and clubs I've belonged to are tattooed somewhere on my body, screaming out to them, "she'll do it!"

So I gave them a choice of three restaurants and the good news was that Cate's Chef Louie worked at none of them. They choose a great Italian restaurant but could it be that a glass of wine which was included with the price of the luncheon swayed their vote? Me thinks, yes!

Well the reservations and checks started to flow in and the next thing you know I was getting phone calls saying, "Is it to late for me to come?" My Flaunt Fab Forty posse was turning into the Flaunt Fab Fifty Five. I decided to let them all in (sounds like Poker to me) since they were possible additions for our live auction next year. I know rather devious, but one must always be planning ahead. I learned this at my Mother's knee! The woman has planning down to an art form.

The day of the luncheon arrives and my foot which I told you had been bothering me was acting up. I called LB and asked her if I could ride with her because of this. "Of course," she said instantaneously and then followed it with, "Wear those high heels I told you to put on. The Doctor told me to do that."

High heels, is the woman crazy? But these flats are not doing it either. I went into the closet and thought now what am I going to wear? I started to peruse the shelves filled with boxes of shoes, all with my labels on them. (I can hear you now! Yes, I am too organized.) Usually one does not start with the shoes they are wearing and then build an outfit, but today this was my plan.

Beautiful pair of RED leather shoes with a magnificent red leather bow on the toe screamed "wear me," wear me! They were a sexy sling back and I thought this will work for a holiday look. Sweaters, oh here is that one that I love, Red, of course with plenty of beautiful beadwork. Now we are talking. Where are those off white slacks? Perfect! Finish this off with some large gold loop earrings and I'm good to go. Mother would approve, just enough glitz. Speaking of glitz, I just had a flash back here to my Mother's purchase with LB of her black jeans with sequins on her derrière. How times have changed!

I had to confess that strange as it sounded my foot felt better when I had on that high heel. Totally amazing! But still not wanting to chance being a total cripple I got out a pair of Ferragamo black patent kitten heels as a backup. I stuffed them into my over sized handbag and started laughing! OMG I'm turning into my Mother. I can see her taking extra shoes just in case. Next thing I will be planning is Botox and a nip and a tuck. LOL! Like Mother like daughter!

But getting back to the luncheon. LB arrives on time and we take off for Giuseppe's. Why did I know there would already be a large number of them there early? Because they always do that! So we started to hand out name badges. Why name badges? Puh leese, have you ever worked with a group where they had a choice of more than one entrée? There is always someone who can't remember what they ordered.

To help the wait staff we wrote a small letter on the lower corner of the name badge. Let me explain: Veal would be V, Linguine/Shrimp would be a L, etc. It is the small things that make an event successful or destroy it! What can I say; I know "organized." But the wait staff loves me!

Ah, now can I sit down and relax for awhile? LB is taking charge and that is perfect. Our darling little Jo sashays into the room with an adorable red knit dress on and of course her pearls. Then the Grand Dame arrives. Ever gracious and setting a tone to the room. I must introduce her to my Mother; they would be a formidable pair of senior Flaunt! That "old" money, quiet money look.

But back to the group, there were the fur vests, leather boots, Jimmy Choo's and oodles of good jewelry. Now remember students if you see a group like this, do not STARE! Just steal quick looks and imprint them in your mind. They were the epitome of taste and flaunt.

Now speaking of taste, everything was wonderful at the luncheon and we finished off the meal with a Trilogy dessert. What you ask? A small Cannoli, Tiramisu and two petite Profiteroles with chocolate. As they left, hugging me and saying how wonderful the lunch was and how we should do this again, I had visions of "why do I think I will be doing this next year?"

Oh well, LB was driving and I had a third glass of wine to self medicate my foot, even though those heels seemed to be working. Then I thought, "What will we have for dinner tonight?" My response to myself was, "who cares?"

Air Kisses,

Alexandra
