The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Xmas Day and the Grand Buffet!

Xmas Day and the Grand Buffet!

After all of the phone calls to relatives hither, thither and yon to wish them a Merry Xmas and of course a quick call to jolly old England to Cate, my day could start now. I might add here that Cate told me about the Xmas tree debacle. Something tells me it was Mummy's cat Cleo. One might describe the little Princess as totally doted on and spoiled. Playing in the Xmas tree, batting around ornaments would be just the thing for that cat to do! Oh well, hard to discipline a cat and I don't see her name on the list for excommunication from the house. After all she does wear a personalized collar with a Swarovski crystal encrusted bell. She is Mummy's favorite!

But I have digressed again and want to address rules for house guests. Rule # 1, be helpful! Air kisses to all who understand that being a guest does not necessarily mean that you cannot assist your host or hostess. My house guests were all of that and then some. Making the morning coffee and some scones with lemon curd and then jumping in to help set up the buffet. Of course being friends for some 20 years we were perfectly comfortable with one another and knew each ones idiosyncrasies. And morning coffee in our PJ's seemed totally normal.

Now I must add also that as a guest you should not be a mooch either. Consider that Rule #2. Open your wallet! Let me give you a good example of how to be a good guest. The fellows were out shooting Sporting Clays and on their list of things to do were to pick up the Honey Baked Ham. I had ordered the largest one possible and this was approaching $100. Our guests insisted on buying it. Now that was totally unexpected and a lovely gesture. Kudos to all who have good "house" guest manners.

Note to our readers: We have a list of House Guest rules in the School of Flaunt Handbook.

Getting back to Xmas day the family and guests were about ready to arrive. The music was playing, the hors d'oeuvres were out on the bar, and orange scented mulled wine and eggnog were at the ready.

My part of the day was to provide the ham, a few appetizers and drinks. The guests were to bring the wine for dinner, side dishes and desserts. And did they ever! Arms filled with bottles of wine, homemade bread and cranberry sauce, salads, scalloped potatoes, yams, pies and Bourbon balls to the perennial favorite bean casserole with French fried onion rings, my kitchen over flowed with delicious dishes. The sights and scents were a marvel! What a buffet awaited us. I promise I will share some of the recipes for our Flaunt Foodies to enjoy!

And so we all had a wonderful time, eating like there was no tomorrow, laughing at silly jokes and singing a few off key carols (much to the chagrin of a few).

It was a lovely Xmas day spent with family and friends. From our home to yours may all of your holidays be spent with the ones you love.
