The School of Flaunt

Back when "Flying Was Fun" Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke were Flight Attendants with a Major International Carrier. Prior to Private Jets coming into vogue, Alexandra and Cate traveled in the First Class World, meeting and greeting the top celebrities, politicians who would become Presidents, nouveau riche, and yes the occasional Headline Grabbing Criminal in Handcuffs!

What the two ladies viewed and experienced became fodder for the School of Flaunt, so much money, such bad taste and oh those terrible manners. Something had to be done! Hence, The School of Flaunt Handbook was born. Read More

Lesson Four Your Abode or All Gated Communties are NOT Created Equal!

Category: The School of Flaunt Lessons  |  Permalink

School of Flaunt Lesson Four deals with your abode,

votre maison, your castle, or All Gated Communities are not Created Equal!

Does Paige Rense know where you live? She certainly should! Why because she is the editor and chief of the most prestigious interiors magazine in the United States, Architectural Digest. We are not talking "Cribs" here.....no fake fur throws can be seen in homes featured in this magazine!

Now a true SOF home that is "full of flaunt" and might possibly catch Paige's eye must have some if not all of the following:

1. A top drawer address or Zip Code. If your town doesn't have a Society Hill start one!

2. Your property must have an outstanding view. Whether that be a picturesque garden, 1,000 acres of Kentucky bluegrass, the Atlantic, the Pacific, Great Lakes or skyline of a magnificent city. Always have a view!  Remember here we did say you could have a wonderful garden and that could be the easiest way of getting that view. Ever hear of landscapers?

3. This leads us to choosing an Interior designer. Needless to say their job is usually easier when you have a view, but basically their most important work is to introduce you to the elegance and taste of a truly unique home. Never think in terms of small. Smallness usually goes hand in hand with TACKY except possibly when purchasing a second home. You may try a budding new designer or if unsure, stick with the tried and true such as Nate Berkus and Barbara Barry. They are worth the investment.

Note: Do not limit yourself to a designer from your city. Talented designers travel the world working and beautifying with the best!

Lastly, there are so many points to discuss in decorating and choosing one's architect, builder, interior designer, all of which will be covered in Lesson Four of the School of Flaunt Handbook!  Remember students, it is still about Location, Location, Location!

What is your Upper East Side?  We are starting a list! Send us your picks for SOF neighborhoods!

Very interesting!!!!Nice article and I can highly recommend some places....There's the New York Plaza Hotel in Manhattan with gorgious views of Central Park, wonderful rooms that are luxurious, and located in a very nice area of New York.
Need more? Just ask....I'll list them all :)  Rob

Do Tell all Rob!! We love the Plaza and the new renovations are wonderful!! You can get a lovely Plaza Suite 1000-4000 square feet!! Imagine the fun you can have!!

Grey Oaks, Naples, Florida

I have recently returned from Naples, Florida! Truly the loveliest of travel destinations. I visited a friend who has a gorgeous home in Grey Oaks. This is the pinnacle of Gated Communities! The guards at the Entry Gate give you printed map instructions on how to locate the home you are visiting! In fact, the guards, themselves, looked very savvy and sophisticated! Absolutely lovely Golf Course,Tennis, and Country Club on site. I know, as I got married to Mr. Clarke in the gardens! Properties are in the multi millions of dollars....this is a TOP School of Flaunt Gated Community! Thank you for the most memorable celebration!

Other parts of the country have Gated Trailer Parks....I'm guessing those are SOF?

Tiffany

Dear Tiffany:

We are speaking of the best of the best in SOF, however one can live in a trailer and have beautiful manners and taste. Is this a double wide?

Cate Clarke

Antiques - every home should have some. Give your home that special look that says, "I've got style and sophistication."

Scott Sanders: Picture Perfect   via: Jayne Chase

Scott is an established New York interior designer who was the head of the Ralph Lauren design team  at The Rhinelander Mansion for many years. His "look" or defining sensibility although not  defined by RL. references a healthy respect for the classic with a modern and definitive approach to color, fabric and  and furniture. Scott's new book PICTURE PERFECT gives the reader an eye into his work and the homes that he has left with his indelible mark: that of a gracious space which has soul and still retains that air of a "designer's touch". The owner of each home can be felt and is expressed through Scotts chic and educated approach.  This is a great summer hostess gift or of course, a great addition to your summer coffee table.  The invitation to his book signing party featured a drawing that he had done as a boy. Everything Scott touches is with style…evident even in his early crayola days!

Love it. Alexandra & Cate

James Swan and "101 Things I Hate About Your House"

"I believe in the imagination. What I cannot see is infinitely more important than what I can see". These words by Duane Michal's are fuel for the endless plausibilities ahead this week as we make the world a bit more beautiful. A number of readers have mentioned the nagging problem of redundant architecture........

"What I can't stand, but seem to see everywhere, is the mind-numbing cookie-cutter approach to residential architecture. I guest at times I hate the whole house.....and the 500 others just like it!"

The economics of scale seems to ignore the aesthetics of a beautiful life!
